Yan Bingtao – each-way @ 22/1 (23.00)

The top 8 in this season’s ranking list contest is this week’s Tour Championship in Llandudno.  One player who missed out in 9th was Yan Bingtao but that may turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the young Chinese player as he prepares for the World Championship.  Finishing in 9th on the one-year list was unlucky for Bingtao but he can consider himself fortunate to be amongst the world’s elite top 16 and thus miss qualifying for the World Championship.

Given the unique physical and mental demands of the 17-day marathon at the Crucible Theatre, some time away from competing could be ideal preparation after a long season.  A final appearance in the German Masters was the highlight of a consistent campaign after two semi-final appearances before Christmas.

The other advantage Bingtao has on many, is there’s no travel required for the World Championship given he’s just bought a home in Sheffield.  For a while now, I’ve thought Yan Bingtao has the perfect ingredients to be a future World Champion.  He has a measured approach to his snooker with a solid all-around game, familiar with more experienced players.  This means a generally high level of consistency which is ideal for the Crucible Theatre marathon as Steve Davis showed in the 1980s.  Similar to Davis, Yan Bingtao plays a centre ball striking style of play, avoiding using side spin that others don’t, this again means he’s a consistent non-flashy type of player.  His undemonstrative demeanour is also similar to Davis, giving very little away to his opponent into how he’s feeling.

The icing on the cake for the bet is the 16th seeding which means if he negotiates the round of 32, he will face a potential match against reigning World Champion, Mark Selby.  In any normal year, the prospect of playing the four-time World Champion would be rather intimidating.  This year, it doesn’t feel the case on a couple of levels, firstly, Bingtao has beaten Selby on three occasions this season.  Secondly, it’s fair to point out that Selby has been a long way below his best and since has come forward to bravely admit to mental health issues.  I hope the Leicester man turns the corner soon but on all known form I’m confident Yan Bingtao will have the measure of him should they meet in the last 16.

After which we would be two matches away from the World Championship final and each-way payout so I suggest you avail yourself at each-way prices above 20/1 (21.00) about Yan Bingtao being the 2022 World Champion.
