Judd Trump v Ronnie O’Sullivan

Former Snooker Professional Craig Edwards @EdwardsTips_ previews the Players Championship encounter between Judd Trump and Ronnie O’Sullivan for BetWithUs

Tuesday 8th February, 19:00

Judd Trump 8/11 (1.72) v Ronnie O’Sullivan 6/5 (2.20)

Tuesday evening sees the blockbuster encounter between Judd Trump and Ronnie O’Sullivan in the round of 16 of the Players Championship.

Judd Trump won the Champion of Champions this season but has failed to progress past the quarter-final stage of a ranking event.  Things have started to unravel for Trump since the Champion of Champions event with an unexpected loss to a good friend, Matt Selt in the UK Championship when the draw had opened up.  He travelled to Llandudno for the Scottish Open and after three facile 4-0 wins, he lost a close one to David Gilbert.  After three years of domination of the professional snooker scene that included an ability to produce under the most intense pressure in matches, it’s possible that losing in ranking events was starting to niggle away in Trump’s subconscious.  It’s certainly looked so since with his anxious body language while sat in his chair, which hasn’t looked as tranquil as recent seasons.  He hit a low last week when Zhao Xintong thumped him in their high profile German Masters encounter.  At first glance, there’s no big deal losing to the UK Champion but nearly every frame Trump had multiple chances to steal them and put the seeds of doubt into his young opponent, which is something that he’d been proficient at why ruling the sport.  In recent months it appears to me Judd Trump either wins easily or as soon as he’s challenged, he’s not responding tot he challenge, like he’s been used to.

The sport’s GOAT, Ronnie O’Sullivan is fighting father time these last two seasons and in general scratching about for his best game and a cue action that he feels comfortable with.  The problem for everyone else, is ‘the Rocket’ is still a formidable opponent especially when in a good frame of mind which he has been, in recent times.  He won ITV’s last event, the World Grand Prix with an inspired comeback against the high functioning Neil Robertson.

“Talent hits a target no one else can hitGenius hits a target no one else can see”, Arthur Schopenhauer.

I love the great philosopher, Arthur Schopenhauer’s quote.  There was no signs that  the genius in Ronnie O’Sullivan was going to surface at 7-5 down to Robertson, not even Ronnie.  No matter, it was vintage O’Sullivan, with the spellbinding four frame spell after the interval that swept the match away from Neil Robertson in the blink of an eye.

it reminds me of a time, that the legendary snooker showman and genius, Alex Higgins needed to live on the edge to produce his best game.  I don’t think Ronnie needs to or likes walking the tight rope like the ultimate king of brinkmanship, Alex Higgins did.  Wait I do know though, is if snooker has genius then they are the two guys at the front of the queue and the ultimate showman of the sport.

In recent times, Judd Trump has gotten the better of their rivalry but to be fair, he’s been the dominant force in the sport and there’s been no tougher time to face him.  At the start of the season, he goaded Ronnie O’Sullivan in the press a little, insinuating that Ronnie O’Sullivan had lost confidence.  Ronnie defused it by saying, he had a point but you can bet your life Ronnie will be up for ramming those words down Trump’s throat now the tide has turned.

I was surprised to see opening quotes of 13/10 (2.30) on Ronnie O’Sullivan as I had him a slight favourite on current form.  It’s rare for me to be able to back Ronnie O’Sullivan at a price but I am doing so on Tuesday night.  In recent seasons it’s been a regular occurrence to be backing Trump in the is match up and happily the bookmakers are still chasing their tails when the two heavyweights clash.  Add a more modest wager on a tense opening frame by supporting the No 50 frame 1 bet, a bet that’s yielded a profit In circa 45% of the matches these two giants of the sport have played.  The bet opened 9/2 (5.50) in a place but the easily available 11/4 (3.75) is fine.
