2022 Dubai Desert Classic

Craig Edwards @EdwardsTips_ previews the Dubai Desert Classic for BetWithUs

January 27-30

Emirates Golf Club

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Par 72, 7424 yards

The European Tour moves on for the second week of 2022 at a regular track, the Emirates Golf Club in Dubai.  The Dubai Desert Classic was founded in 1989 and with benign conditions the winning score often gets to circa twenty under par.  This year for the first time the tournament has been awarded prestigious Rolex Series Status and has attracted a strong field with Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland heading the betting market like last week.  Greens in regulation has often been a strong barometric for winners here as the course has often been set up with plenty of rough as punishment for missed fairways to this week’s slick Bermuda Grass greens.

Trust the Young Guns to use last year’s debut experience to good use in the Desert Shootout

Young Dane, Rasmus Hojgaard has already proved himself one of the most reliable closers in world golf at the tender age of twenty.  His performance last week in Abu Dhabi really caught my eye in the knowledge that he plays in spells of brilliant form.  The 20th place last week served notice that perhaps Hojgaard is about to catch fire in the Desert this week at a venue he debuted impressively at twelve months ago with a top 10 finish on his opening seasonal outing.  What was noticeable last year, was how he backed it up well with a 6th place in Saudi in a higher-class event.  Last year’s win at Crans in the Omega European Masters illustrates Hojgaard has what it takes if there’s punishment waiting for wayward tee shots as it’s one of the trickier tests on the European Tour off the tee.  Therefore, if Rasmus Hojgaard’s game sharpens up in a similar vein on his second start this year like last, he’s a good each way bet for this week’s Dubai Desert Classic at 66/1 (67.00).

Japanese young talent, Takumi Kanaya made an eye-catching debut at the Emirates Club last year with a top 10 finish.  Just outside the World’s top 50, progress has been rapid for the twenty-three-year-old from Hiroshima since turning professional a couple of years ago after a glittering amateur career that saw him hold the World No.1 amateur ranking for over a full year.  He started 2022 over in Hawaii on the PGA Tour and missed the cut before a quick turnaround and trip to Abu Dhabi for last week’s European Tour event.  He started brightly on day 1 but faded after the difficult day 2 conditions.  Without the travel of the previous week, we should expect Takumi Kanaya to strip fitter this week in Dubai with last year’s course experience to help.
