We have a holiday edition of the NBA banker and parlay. The NBA will have games scattered all day for us to find the winning picks. Let’s take a look at today’s Banker and 2-team parlay.
Utah Jazz vs Los Angeles Lakers
You guys know I do my best to try and bring you the winning picks here in my daily column at BetWithUS. I run a fairly simple predictive model. It usually provides me with enough edges to guide me in the right direction to begin my NBA handicap. These numbers seem pretty dialed in today and close to what the books are posting. So, I’m looking for anomalies and I think I found one here with the Utah Jazz.
Most predictive models take season-long performance and combine it with recent performance. the difference in models is usually how heavily each is weighted. This will be the basis in today’s pick where the Utah Jazz looked absolutely terrible without Rudy Gobert in the lineup. So any model using recent results heavily weighted will have them undervalued. Rudy Gobert missed five games before returning on Sunday night. The Jazz had a bad stretch and were particularly bad on defense in his absence. When he returned, the Jazz return to their winning ways and beat the tough Denver Nuggets 125-102. Gobert had 18 points and 19 rebounds and, of course, was there to protect the rim.
The Los Angeles Lakers were overvalued by the market for a while, but I believed that everybody has caught up to their deficiencies. The Lakers have star power, but they were heavily reliant on Anthony Davis and his defense. While Davis is out, this team is a middle-of-the-pack Western Conference team. It will be interesting to see how the books value the Lakers when Davis returns, but for now, I think they have accurately pegged them as simply an average NBA team.
The Jazz have something to prove and the Lakers are still the NBA’s glamour franchise. We may be getting a little value with how bad they looked in the games when Rudy Gobert was out. In what should be a fun nightcap to a full day of basketball, our first pick will be the Utah Jazz -5.5.
Indiana Pacers vs Los Angeles Clippers
The Pacers are not playing good basketball. The Pacers have lost 3 in a row and 9 of their last 10 games. The Pacers most recent game was a home loss against Phoenix. They only scored 38 points in the first half, and 18 in the fourth quarter. Simply put this team needs to make some changes before the trade deadline.
The Pacers should be better with the talent they have, and I’m not able to pinpoint the problem. However, the Clippers’ struggles are fairly predictable. The Clippers entered the season without max player Kawhi Leonard. The other Max contract player is Paul George, who earned his money by leading the team without Kawhi. With Paul George out, the role players assembled to support these two stars and now taking center stage. There are times when they look great, but other times they fail to keep up. I think tonight will be an opportunity for them to look great against a flailing Indiana Pacers team. The first half of our two-team parlay is the Los Angeles Clippers -2.
Memphis Grizzlies vs Chicago Bulls
The Chicago Bulls were the talk of the league as they got to the top of the Eastern Conference standings. Injuries have hit the team however and they are currently without 3 of their top players. Zach LaVine, Lonzo Ball, and Alex Caruso will all be out. DeMar DeRozan and Nikola Vucevic will try and carry the load, but it’s tough for any team to miss three starters.
The Memphis Grizzlies are the hottest team in the NBA winning 11 in a row before they finally hit the wall against Dallas on Friday night. I love the way this Memphis team is built, and I expect them to get back to their winning ways tonight. This game had the potential to be a barnburner but with the Bulls being so depleted, I think it may struggle to stay competitive. The second half of the two-team parlay is the Memphis Grizzlies -7.5
