NBA Betting Picks for 1/5/22 Banker and Parlay

By @SpreadAstaire

We missed the banker last night, but we were able to make it a profitable day by hitting the two-team parlay. Tonight, has plenty of options on a loaded 11-game slate. Which teams will we be focusing on to make the winning NBA pick?

Houston Rockets vs Washington Wizards

The Houston Rockets are filled with turmoil after team leader Christian Wood and Kevin Porter Jr got into a spat with assistant head coach John Lucas, who is acting as head coach of the team. The Rockets have been filled with frustration as they are in the middle of a rebuild. The Rockets effort and focus can wax and wane. Oftentimes when they get behind, they have a tendency to zone out, especially on their defensive assignments.

This is frustrating to older coaches, such as John Lucas, who are used to players being more diligent in their assignments in order to earn playing time. It is tough for Lucas to reconcile these players “playing through their mistakes” as he would have been pulled for such dereliction of defensive duties when he was a player.

Any team suffering turmoil can be tough to back, but in the Rockets case, it’s even worse… because they weren’t even good to begin with! The Rockets were a popular team with me to back when they were catching a lot of points, but with the current turmoil (and the fact that the line is not in double digits), it’s very hard for me to back the Rockets right now. Giving young players time to play and play through their mistakes is important, but in this case, we must wonder if the lack of a winning culture is going to be a hindrance to their development. Houston is working through a tough balancing act of trying to decide how best to proceed with their multiple young players. This gives us an opportunity to fade them until they figure it out.

The Washington Wizards are moving back into playing well after a rough stretch in the middle of the season. The Wizards will still be missing Montrezl Harrell and Spencer Dinwiddie, yet they have enough firepower to blow away a team in turmoil. Bradley Beal is returning to the form he displayed last year when he was the NBA’s leading scorer. Kyle Kuzma and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope are showing how they were part of a championship-level defense. The Wizards are rounding into form. This is the perfect time to take them against a Rockets team that is struggling with their direction. Tonight’s Banker is the  Washington Wizards -6.5.

2 Team Parlay

Atlanta Hawks vs Sacramento Kings

The Atlanta Hawks were rocked harder than most teams by covid, but they are starting to get back to full strength. The Hawks offense was back to a great form against the Trailblazers, but their defense was non-existent as they lost 136-131. Still, Atlanta is a much more talented team than the woeful Kings, who will be traveling back from Los Angeles after a game last night.

The Kings are a poorly run organization with poor coaching and have a roster that does not fit. The Kings have three-point guards, one shooting guard who plays terrible defense, and one NBA-level wing forward. With Richaun Holmes out, they are also below average at the center position.

With Atlanta performing poorly as a late due to all the people missing games, they are very undervalued right now and we can use them to take advantage of a Kings squad that I love to fade. After a big game against the Lakers, this should be a prime letdown spot. The first half of the two-team parlay is the Atlanta Hawks +1.5.

Golden State Warriors vs Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks have played well of late, but they have done so against weaker teams. Beating the Kings, the Trail Blazers, a depleted Nuggets squad, and the Oklahoma City Thunder does not engender confidence in me that they can compete with the NBA’s best. Dallas has a transcendent superstar Luka Doncic, but they have many problems that Luka needs to mask. Luka will not be able to hide the multitude of issues with the roster against the Golden State Warriors

The Warriors have the best record and the best point differential of any team in the league. The Warriors have excellent shooters, and they’ve been back to the elite defensive level that they showed during the championship run. I expect them to take advantage of an overvalued Dallas squad that has been beating up on weaker teams. The second half of our two-team parlay is the State Warriors -5.5

Parlay: Atlanta Hawks + 1.5 / Golden State Warriors -5.5 at +265 (3.65) at BetUS
