Zhao Xintong’s younger compatriots to feed off Sundays UK Championship win
David Gilbert v Chang Bingyu
Betting Odds: David Gilbert (1.25) & Chang Bingyu (4.00)
Wednesday 8th December
A difficult second round encounter for David Gilbert as he crosses swords with one of the best young talents from China, Chang Bingyu.
David Gilbert arrives in Wales after a respectable showing in the UK Championship where he reached the round of 16 but surprisingly lost to Andy Hicks 5-4. The ‘angry farmer’ has been a model of consistency this season with a first ranking title at the Championship League that has seen Gilbert rise to 5th on the provisional one-year Ranking list. With that context in mind, it’s fair to say, that Gilbert will be disappointed with last week in the knowledge that he needed to make the semi-finals to have a chance to qualify for the elite Masters’ field in January.
Chang Bingyu has shown precocious talent from an early age, beating several of the sport’s leading players, firstly, as a wild card amateur in the home Chinese events pre Covid-19 hiatus and last year on his first full year as a professional when he accounted for non-other than Mark Allen in the UK Championship. He’s still only nineteen years of age and is a very stylish left-hander similar to last week’s UK Championship winner, Zhao Xintong.
We know how long it’s taken Xintong to find his feet on tour so it’s completely reasonable to believe Bingyu is far from the finished article. Zhao Xintong it has to be stated had been in very poor form this season before his UK Championship win on Sunday and Bingyu has also been out of form. Despite that Bingyu’s phenomenal break building stats have continued from his rookie season on tour with six century breaks so we know the essence of his game is still intact.
I think, it’s fair to expect the young Chinese players’ spirits to be buoyed by Zhao Xintong’s win last weekend and with David Gilbert potentially feeling a little flat after his exertions in the UK Championship it could be the perfect time to take him on. With that in mind, I’m proposing a bet on the money line and a century break for the outsider Chang Bingyu.

Ryan Day v Gao Yang
Betting Odds: Ryan Day (1.33) v Gao Yang (3.40)
Wednesday 8th December
I thought Ryan Day’s win in the Shootout at the start of 2021 would set the forty-year-old off on a run back up the World Rankings. Things haven’t materialized like that for the Welshman who has been looking very edgy at times with a lot of movement on his shots culminating in a first-round loss at the UK Championship to the veteran, Peter Lines.
Gao Yang’s profile is going the other way on his second year on tour with a solid plethora of form in recent events for the seventeen-year-old. Yes, Gao Yang is younger than Chang Bingyu but like Bingyu and Xintong, he too is a stylish left-hander with a big future in the sport
My tissue had his price at between 2.50 and 2.75 for this match so the opening show of 3.75 was like an early Christmas present for Gao Yang to beat Ryan Day on Wednesday.
