BANKER (Colgate vs. Northeastern)
I am very surprised at this line given the styles of both teams. Colgate is a very good offensive team who has also played a toughschedule to this point as well. They won’t on the road to NC state and almost came away with a victory but covered with ease, and then they went into the Carrier Dome and dropped 100 to beat Syracuse by double digits. Since this huge win against Syracuse, they have dropped 2 in a row to Harvard and Niagara.
They were favorites in both games, and I think we are getting a discount price on Colgate because of their recent struggles. They face Northeaster, who they already defeated in their first game of the season 65-58 in a low scoring affair. The bottom line for me in this game is that Northeastern just can’tscore the ball at an effective enough rate to keep up with Colgate.
Northeastern has also been prone to giving up huge second half runs this year as they have folded late in a ton of games so far. They covered the 1H in the first matchup with Colgate and folded second half. Same story against Georgia state, Harvard, and Colorado State where they covered the 1H in these games with relative ease and then just got blown out in the second half.
Colgate has more talent by a wide margin but Northeastern has the home court advantage. I see this game playing out like many northeastern games have this year where NE will compete hard for 20-30 minutes but then the overall talent of Colgate and their high-powered offense will take over down the stretch and lead them to a road victory. Score prediction: Colgate 78-68
Going with the mid major parlay tonight. New Mexico state is a team that I was not very high on coming into the season, but they have proved me wrong. They look like a very solid team as they are off to a 5-2 start with impressive double digit wins over Davidson and UC Irvine. New Mexico State is led by journey man, Teddy Allen, who is off to a terrific start at his new school averaging 18/6/2 on 41% shooting and 37% shooting from deep.
Allen is a 6’6 combo guard and a matchup nightmare. He is too quick for larger/slower bigs and can overpower smaller guards so if UTEP doesn’t have a game plan in place, Allen could run wild as I expect him to play better in this matchup than the first time, he faced off against UTEP, in what was maybe his worst game of the season so far.
UTEP is a solid team led by lightning quick guard, Souley Boum, who is averaging 21/3/3on 45% shooting and 41% from deep. Boum likes to attack off the dribble and create for himself and others, but I think the physicality of NMSU will be a problem for Boum and I don’t think UTEP has enough secondary scoring options to keep up with this high-powered New Mexico State offense.
Monmouth is another mid major team who has been very impressive to start the year. Monmouth is off to a 5-1 start and have won 5 in a row after their dropping their opening game of the season in a road loss at Charlotte. They are playing excellent basketball right now and are coming off 2 very impressive wins including a double-digit win over a solid Princeton squad and a come from behind victory on the road at Cincinnati as double-digit underdogs.
Niagara is a solid team, but I expect the depth and experience of the senior laden Monmouth squad to take over down the stretch and lead them to a win. Monmouth is also number 1 in the country in Free Throw % and number 22 in 3P% so if this game is close late, expect them to be able to knock down clutch free throws or nail outside shots if need be.
