Craig Edwards @EdwardsTips_ previews the South Africa Open for BetWithUs

December 2-5

Gary Player Country Club

Sun City, South Africa

Par 72, 7832 yards

The Omicron Covid-19 strain found by the scientists of the host nation has put paid to the European Tour co-sanctioning this week’s South African Open but happily, it goes on as part of the home Sunshine Tour schedule.   I say, happy because I had already done my research that had thrown up several South African players.  The event was founded in 1903 and last year’s renewal was the first time the Gary Player Country Club had played host, but the track is well known to golf fans having been host to the Nedbank Challenge for many years prior.  Most of this week’s competitors are also well used to playing the Gary Player Course given the Sun City Challenge has been played there yearly, and a regular fixture on the home Sunshine Tour.

While the Big Cats are away, Ockie and J C, each way play

BetWithUs Golf Betting Picks: South African Open

J C Ritchie – each-way @ 35/1 (36.00)

Ockie Strydom – each way @ 66/1 (67.00)

J C Ritchie – each-way @ 35/1 (36.00)

J C Ritchie looks perfectly primed to take advantage of a weakened field in this week’s South African Open after last week’s 8th at the Joburg Open.  Only playing two rounds could turn out to be the perfect preparation for the twenty-seven-year-old from Standerton though he was unlucky when making a hole-in-one at the 17th that the prize of a Jaguar F-type car was only applicable to the unplayed rounds 3 and 4.  It’s his form at the Gary Player Country Club that bears the closest scrutiny with 6th at last year’s South African Open when it was co-sanctioned by the European Tour.  That wasn’t the first time J C Ritchie had performed well at the track if we go back to the year previous at the Sun City Challenge when he was 4th to Garrick Higgo and 7th in the 2016 renewal to Oliver Bekker.  For my eyes. J C Ritchie has a real solid each-way look, this week at 33/1 (34.00).

Ockie Strydom – each-way @ 66/1 (67.00)

I was shocked to see the early quotes of 100/1 and 80/1 (81.00) about Ockie Strydom this week at the Gary Player Country Club.  He fits the same modus operandi to our other selection, J C Ritchie this week, having performed solidly last week at the Joburg Open for two rounds finishing 12th.  Similarly, he has plenty of previous good form at Sun City and in the 2019 event was the runner up to Garrick Higgo while coming 3rd in 2016 when Oliver Bekker won, he also managed a 5th sandwiched in between in 2018.  There can be little doubt that Ockie Strydom is a course specialist coming back to his best form at the right time and quotes of 66/1 upwards are well worth taking each-way.
