BetWithUs Golf Betting Picks: Joburg Open
Zander Lombard – Top 20 @ 3/1 (4.00)
Zander Lombard – each way @ 70/1 (71.00)
An interesting co-sanctioned event between the European and Sunshine tours that’s been running since 2017. The years 2018 and 2019 missed out on the Joburg Open but the Randpark Golf Club played host to two South African Opens during that period, so we have plenty of course form to work from this week.
Jacques Kruyswijk to get his first European Tour win this week
Jacques Kruyswijk has found a new level of form, consistency and probably belief on the European Tour during the 2021 season so a win would round off his breakout year nicely. We’ve just seen Talor Gooch turn a good year into a superb one on his final PGA Tour start and Kruyswijk could do the same.
Twenty-three starts for the twenty-nine-year-old South African have seen him accumulate fourteen top 20 finishes, five of which have been top 10s on the European Tour while his win in the Sunshine Invitational on his home tour a couple of months ago was well overdue in context from such consistency.
One of the best performances in his career prior was the 4th place in this event back in 2017 so we know he copes well with Randpark Golf Club but in truth, his stats have been superb all year and is likely suited my most tracks. These tell me that Jacques Kruyswijk belongs at the top table of the European Tour nowadays so a win this week looks well within his capabilities.
A return to familiar climes is just what the doctor ordered for Zander Lombard this week
Zander Lombard – Each way @ 80/1 (81.00)
The start of 2016 saw Zander Lombard chase home, Haydn Porteous, in the Joburg Open when eventually finishing a gallant runner up here, a few weeks after finishing 4th at the Australian PGA to end his rookie year of 2015. Now five years on at the age of twenty-six, Lombard is still waiting on his first European
Tour title which would have been thought very unlikely back in 2016. He has won once on his home Sunshine Tour at the Vodacom Origins of Golf in 2018 but we have to go back to last year’s Joburg Open for his last top 20 finish, illustrating how poor 2021 has been for the Pretorian.
There have been glimmers of hope in Lombard’s recent outings with top 30 finishes at the Mallorca Golf Open and his last event, the AVIV Dubai Championship. The return home in conjunction with a reunion to the Randpark Golf Club could be ‘just what the doctor ordered’ for Zander Lombard this week. The runner up finish back in 2016 wasn’t the first time Lombard had shown an affinity for Randpark as he was winning here as an amateur nearly a decade ago. With that sort of close relationship with Randpark, I’m taking the safe option of a top 20 finish at prices around circa 3/1 (4.00) as a golf banker bet while adding him in the outright market for small stakes each-way.
