Different Types of Bets

The best sportsbooks will provide you with a large selection of exciting betting options on big
soccer matches. These are the key bet types at your disposal:

Result

This is a straightforward bet on the result of a match. There are three options – home win,
draw, or away win. The sports betting sites will weigh up the strengths and weaknesses of both
teams – factoring in home advantage, injuries, form, head-to-heads, fatigue, and so on – and
then assign odds on each potential outcome. The odds tell you the potential profit you stand to
earn, and they also explain the implied probability of each outcome.

Goalscorer Betting

You can bet on a player to score the first goal in a game, the last goal in a game, or to score at
any time in a game. Some sports betting sites also offer more obscure betting options, such as a
player to score a header, to score a free-kick, to score from outside the box, to score 2+ goals,
or to score a hat-trick.

Correct Score

This requires you to specify the final score in a game. It is harder to predict the correct score
than the result, so you will be rewarded with significantly better odds. For example, you might
find odds of 2.10 (11/10 or +110) on Barcelona to beat Real Sociedad, but 10.00 (9/1 or
+1000) on Barcelona to win 2-0. For that reason, you can bet on a few different correct scores
and still earn a tidy profit if one comes in.

Half-Time / Full-Time

A prediction on the result at half-time and at full-time. For example, you could bet on Borussia
Dortmund to be winning at both half-time and full-time in a game against Bayer Leverkusen,
or you might opt for a draw at half-time and Dortmund to win at full-time. You can also simply
bet on the half-time result.

Draw No Bet

This market protects you in case the team you bet on to win a game ends up drawing. If you
opt for draw no bet, you receive significantly lower odds than a standard bet on a team to win.
However, you get your money back if the game ends all-square. This is a great option if you
are betting on an underdog. There is another option called double chance, whereby you can
back a team to win and a draw, rolled into one bet.

Total Goals

A prediction on the total goals scored by both teams. You can bet on over or under 0.5 goals,
1.5 goals, 2.5 goals, 3.5 goals, 4.5 goals, and so on. Some sportsbooks also offer betting on the
exact goals in a game, group goals betting, and Asian goal lines.

Both Teams to Score

This is a pretty self-explanatory betting option.
Win to Nil
A prediction on a team to win and to keep a clean sheet. You will get much better odds by
backing a team to win to nil as opposed to simply betting on them to win a game.

Handicaps

You can give a team a handicap to improve the odds. For example, you will be in for a much
larger payout if you successfully bet on Liverpool -2.5 against Aston Villa as opposed to
simply betting on Liverpool to win the game. The Reds would need to win by 3 or more goals
for your bet to pay off, so it makes things harder for you, but your reward is a larger profit.

You can also give a team a plus handicap. For example, if you bet on Aston Villa +2.5, they
could win, draw or lose by up to 2 goals. There are two forms of handicap betting: simple
European handicaps, and more complex Asian handicaps. Read our Asian handicap guide for
more details.

Combinations

Many bookmakers allow you to combine any of the options mentioned above in a single
wager, known as a same game parlay or a same game multi. For example, you could bet on
PSG to beat Lyon and under 3.5 goals, or both teams to score and over 2.5 goals in a game
between Atalanta and Lazio.
