NBA Opening Night Betting Picks: Banker and Parlay

By @SpreadAstaire

The NBA tips off Tuesday night with two exciting games. The Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn
Nets square up in a rematch in one of the most exciting series from last year’s playoffs. The
Steph Curry/LeBron James rivalry continues as the Los Angeles Lakers host the Golden State
Warriors.

Brooklyn Nets vs Milwaukee Bucks

A seven-game playoff series that went to overtime in Game 7 shows how close these two teams
are. The winner of this roller coaster ride, the Milwaukee Bucks, became the eventual
champion. Those who watched the series know how close it was! Kevin Durant stepped on the
line while shooting the game-winning three-point shot, making it only worth 2 and leading to
overtime. If Durant’s foot had been back just a few inches, we would have a different NBA
champion.

The Milwaukee Bucks return most of the players from their Championship squad. The Nets
however are embroiled in controversy as Kyrie Irving’s vaccination status has left him ineligible
for practices and home games. The Nets are still star-studded, however, featuring James
Harden and Kevin Durant. While Kyrie’s absence means the role players will need to step up,
the Nets are still a strong favorite to win the championship.

The Nets were favored by NBA odds but with Kyrie Irving leaving the team the Bucks are now
the slight favorite. I believe the Milwaukee Bucks are the right pick here. Home court advantage
was a huge factor during the playoffs, and I believe Fiserv Forum will be rocking and ready to
celebrate the Bucks first championship since 1971. The Bucks were able to defeat the Nets in
last year’s playoffs and I believe they will beat the Nets again on opening night.

Banker: Milwaukee Bucks -1

Golden State Warriors vs Los Angeles Lakers

For a bonus play, I like a parlay in the evening Western Conference game. The Warriors will
have a strong team this year but are still waiting on the return of Klay Thompson from injury and
trying to integrate three lottery picks from the last two years into their offense. The Warriors will
be a strong team this season, but I think the learning curve will be steeper for this new squad.
Therefore, I will take the star players on the Lakers to coalesce quicker and win the season
opener home.

The Lakers will have chemistry issues as well, but with the star power of LeBron James and
Anthony Davis, the Lakers will be too much for the Warriors to handle on opening night. The two
teams are still transitioning into their new rosters. In these formative stages of team building, LA has more offensive potential. These transitions will provide an opportunity for a play on the
under as well. LeBron led teams traditionally play at a slow pace as he thrives in half-court
basketball and excels at controlling the tempo of the game. The last thing LeBron wants to do is
get into a run-and-gun shootout with the Warriors. Therefore, I think the Lakers’ desire for a
slow pace of play will lead this game to go under.

Parlay: Los Angeles Lakers -4.5/Under 230.5
